Wong Shun Leung Wing Chun/Ving Tsun III –Sigung Wong & Bruce Lee

As mentioned in the last article, besides being a great fighter, Sigung Wong Shun Leung was a great teacher who produced many excellent Wing Chun Sifu’s.  Sigung Wong’s influence was not only on his students or grand students.  The development of Bruce Lee’s kung fu was greatly impacted by Sigung Wong.  Although, officially Sigung Wong was Bruce Lee’s senior Kung Fu brother, however, Sigung Wong was the one responsible for teaching Wing Chun to Bruce Lee.

When Bruce Lee was learning Wing Chun in Hong Kong.  He and other Ip Man’s students would go train at Sigung Wong’s house.  Bruce Lee asked Sigung Wong to only teach him, but Sigung Wong turned him down.  Therefore, Bruce Lee came up with a plan.  He would wait downstairs for other students to show up, then Bruce would tell them that Sigung Wong wasn’t home.  After the rest of people left, Bruce Lee then got to train with Sigung Wong one-on-one.

Sigung Wong was the coach and notary for Bruce Lee’s last fight before he left for the USA.  Bruce Lee’s opponent was a taller person from a Northern style of Kung Fu.  The first round of the fight didn’t go well for Bruce Lee.  After the first round, Bruce was injured on the side of his eye.  Bruce Lee told Sigung Wong he wanted to give up.  Knowing Bruce was very proud and wanted to win on everything all the time, Sigung Wong thought if Bruce Lee had gave up at that time, this loss might shatter his confidence and would brought much negativities to his future Kung Fu development.  So, Sigung Wong encouraged Bruce Lee to keep fighting and gave him some sound advices on how to defeat his opponent.  When the second round started, Bruce Lee followed Sigung Wong’s advice to be on the offense right away.  Almost in seconds, Bruce Lee knocked out his opponent.

The letter above was sent from Bruce Lee to Sigung Wong.  There are a few sentences which serve as testaments of Sigung Wong’s influence on Bruce Lee’s kung fu and their close relationship.  Bruce Lee wrote “Although the principle (of martial arts) is important, practicality is still important.  Both are needed.  I am grateful to you and Sifu for teaching me the way of Wing Chun in Hong Kong.  Actually, I need to thank you for leading me to walk on the path of practicality … I may make a trip back to Hong Kong.  Hope you still live in the same address.  We are very close friends.  We need to meet more often and chat about the past, won’t that be fun?  Please give my regards to Sifu Ip when you see him.”
